California letters, 1852-1858.

Collection consists of letters from A. S. Gibbons and his wife, Sarah Cloud Gibbons, to her family in Virginia (1852-1857). A. S. Gibbons was an itinerant Methodist preacher who spent one year teaching at Santa Clara College. The letters describe domestic problems and the temperance movement. Also included are letters concerning James A. Krebs, a prospector (1854-1858); a letter to H. H. Heath (July 22, 1854) concerning schools and law practice in San Francisco; a letter from William D. Jeffreys to J. O. Jeffreys (July 21, 1855); a page from a diary (1852), author unknown; and a letter to "My Dear Teacher" (March 15, 1853).
